Hello Gravity fans!

Thanks to all who came to our performance on August 3rd. We had a great time opening up for Chicago-based progressive rock band District 97, featuring 2007 American Idol Finalist Leslie Hunt.

Below is a brief review of our performance, as well as information about our show on August 9th at the Cuyahoga County Fair. Special thanks to OhioProg founder Allen Thompson for coordinating the show with District 97 and writing this post! You can view pictures from our August 3rd show and more by clicking on the link here.

Hope to see you all at our show on August 9th!

###

A small group of people recently gathered for a rare performance by Cleveland based progressive rock band Gravity. This past Wednesday they joined another Cleveland group, On the Air, to play alongside Chicago progressive rock band District 97. This was the first time Gravity performed as a trio, minus their keyboard player Joe Capka. He was unavailable due to prior commitments but the band didn’t want to pass up an opportunity to share the stage with District 97, who are quickly rising to the top of the progressive rock genre. Those that attended may have witnessed Gravity history as this Tuesday, August 9, 2011, Capka returns to the fold for a spot at the annual Cuyahoga County Fair in Berea, Ohio.

Gravity will perform from 8:00PM – 10:00PM on the Midway / South Stage. The set will include music from their first two albums, brand new tracks and covers from classic bands the Beatles, Rush and Van Halen. The band has already opened for world-renowned acts such as Dream Theater, Symphony X, Kamelot and King’s X, and they have won numerous competitions in Cleveland, including the Live Nation 2007 High School Rock Off at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame where they placed first out of over 200 Ohio bands. They have a major progressive rock festival credit to their name when they performed at 3RP in Pittsburgh in 2009.

Greetings Gravity fans!

Hope you are all enjoying the final weeks of summer. These past few months have certainly been an exciting time for us, particularly with the release of our second full-length CD “Midnight Sonata.”

We are thrilled to announce that we have ended our summer shows in Cleveland on a high note. On August 4, 2010, we took FIRST PLACE at the Medina County Fair in their annual Battle of the Bands! Besides winning an excellent cash prize, we had an amazing time playing at this large event in incredibly humid conditions!

Thank you to everyone who watched, listened, and had a great time with us – we could not have won this prize without your intense enthusiasm! Thanks also the many great bands that we were lucky to share the stage with, particularly Oh the Humanity!, Trancemitter, Stefani Reeder, and of course our fellow prog-rock brethren Cheyne-Stokes.

We look forward to ending our summer shows in Pittsburgh next Saturday, where we will be one of four headlining bands at the “Day of Prog” coordinated by 3RP Productions.

Thanks and keep rockin’!

For Immediate Release

CLEVELAND, OH (June 21, 2010) – Instrumental progressive rock band Gravity (www.myspace.com/gravity33) announces the release of their second full-length album Midnight Sonata. This 8-song CD is the band’s follow-up to their 2007 debut Into Oblivion, which continues to receive rave reviews from the progressive rock community.

In celebration of the new release, Gravity will be having a CD Release Party on July 16th at the Powerhouse Pub in downtown Cleveland. Opening will be progressive rock quintet Cheyne-Stokes. Admission will be free and open to the public.

Formed in 2006, Gravity has achieved numerous successes in the Cleveland area – finishing first out of over 200 bands at the Live Nation High School Rock Off and appearing with national acts Dream Theater, Kamelot and Symphony X. They see the release of Midnight Sonata as yet another step in their musical journey. Drummer Matt Kerschner says: “This CD is the culmination of two years of hard work, and we feel it really showcases what we’re trying to accomplish musically along with some of the new directions we’re taking.”

Engineered at Mercinary Studios by Jason Vanek, (engineer and songwriter for Auburn Records band Eternal Legacy), Midnight Sonata crosses a broader spectrum than the band’s debut release. While some songs like “The Darkest Hour” and “Burning Sky” are some of the band’s heaviest offerings yet, other songs like “Serenity” and “Beyond the Horizon” showcase the band’s melodic sensitivity and emotional songwriting.

“With this new CD, we wanted to show the band’s many faces,” says Kerschner. “When we started writing, Eric utilized his 7-string and other down-tuned guitars so we came up with really aggressive, energetic material. But then as we continued in pre-production, we tried to complement the heavier songs with some softer ones. We love the early Genesis and Yes material that is dynamic, acoustic and melodic, and I think those influences can definitely be seen in some of the lighter songs.”

Guitarist Eric Potapenko agrees and highlights the vast diversity of ideas on the CD. “The main melody of ‘Beyond the Horizon’ was actually written over five years ago, when I was in the eighth grade,” he says with a laugh. “The ideas that we used for this CD came from all over the place. Some songs were written in an afternoon and were really experimental, while others took some time to fully create.” Keyboardist Joe Capka adds, “the title Midnight Sonata is meant to reflect the different sides of Gravity: the dark and light, the heavy and soft. It also brings the whole collection together by combining the titles of the first and last tracks.”

After their CD Release Party, the band will be continuing to make its way around the Midwest. Most notably, they will be a featured group at the “Day of Prog” on August 14th, an event in Pittsburgh organized by Three Rivers Progressive Rock Festival (3RP) coordinator Howard Levy.

“We’re really excited about performing a lot this summer,” says Gravity bassist Brian Craft. “We’re looking to get to as many new cities and new venues as possible as we promote our new release.”
